A QUICK START TO USING THE TARTARUS DATABASE

A QUICK START TO USING THE TARTARUS DATABASE

How to use the database:

* To simply peruse the results:

From the home page, follow the link THE DATABASE , find the sequence of interest, bring up its web page. A few of the data products and some general information about the observation are shown:

* To retrieve the entire set of products for the sequence via the web:

From the home page, go via THE DATABASE link directly to the master list of reduced sequences. Choose your sequence and bring up its web page. Near the bottom of the page follow the link "A tar file of the compressed products is available here: " to the ftp directory. Select sequence.tar.gz by clicking on it with your mouse, holding down the right-hand-button, that brings up a menu, choose the "save link to..." item, and a retrieval will be initiated.

gunzip sequence.tar.gz

tar xvf sequence.tar

will extract a set of TARTARUS files , including the spectral files which will allow you to immediately start fitting the spectral data! To start at the spectral fit shown on the web page, start up xspec with the sequence_webfit.xcm command file
xspec - sequence_webfit.xcm

* To retrieve the spectral products ONLY via the web page:

(a great time saver if your connection is slow) Follow the above instruction, but retrieve the file sequence_spectral.tar.gz

button gif To retrieve an entire sequence via standard ftp:

ftp universe.gsfc.nasa.gov

log in as user "anonymous", with your email address as password.

cd to pub/tartarus

this puts you at the top of the ftp directory tree and so you cd to the sequence of interest, where you will find the gzipped tar files.

e.g. cd pub/tartarus/74098000/ contains

-rw-r--r-- 1 228 20 290367 May 5 10:02 74098000.05_05_00.09:27.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 228 20 56 May 5 10:02 74098000.05_05_00.09:27.sum
-rw-rw-r-- 1 228 830 6722359 May 5 10:02 74098000.tar.gz
-rw-rw-r-- 1 228 830 4556941 May 5 10:02 74098000_spectral.tar.gz
-rwxrwxr-x 1 228 830 76 May 5 10:02 index.html
set filetype to BINARY and grab the tar files.

USERS WITH SLOW TRANSFER DUE TO NETWORK PROBLEMS MAY WISH TO RETRIEVE ONLY THE SPECTRAL.TAR.GZ FILE. THIS CONTAINS EVERYTHING REQUIRED FOR SPECTRAL FITTING, AND IS MUCH FASTER TO DOWNLOAD THAN THE FULL SET OF DATA PRODUCTS.

This database has been created by the Tartarus Team, and they, rather than the HEASARC, are responsible for the contents. The database has been created by analysing AGN data as observations have entered the public archive. Thus, AGN will enter this database dependent on the date of entry to the archive.
