Tartarus (Version 3.1) is a significant improvement over the previous
Versions 1 and 2. The 611 sequences for which products have been made
available are complete in the sense that either: the target object was
not detected, in which case an upper limit on GIS2 source counts is
given; or the intended AGN target was detected and the data were fully
analysed. The products available in Tartarus should be of publishable
quality without the need for the data to be re-reduced. However,
while every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the
processing, the Tartarus Team cannot guarantee that the Tartarus
products are entirely without errors.
Users of Tartarus products should, in particular, be aware of the
rudimentary nature of the spectral fitting and the way in which source and
background regions are defined.
For the fitting of spectra, Tartarus uses only a very simple absorbed
or unabsorbed power-law model. Users are thus suggested to examine closely
the spectral-fitting images and results to determine the validity of
the best-fitting models. The best-fitting model parameters are not
provided for those fits having a reduced-chi-squared greater than
15. Users are able to easily re-fit the spectra with an arbitrary
model using the spectral files provided.
The source and background regions are, in general, defined
automatically by the processing scripts. Images for all sequences have
be visually examined, and, for some sequences, a "custom region" has
been determined by-eye. The use of a custom region is noted in the
list of warnings for each sequence. Users are suggested to examine
the regions being used, and the Tartarus Team welcomes any suggestions
regarding the definitions of these regions.
